Mealey’s Furniture, a family-run group of three stores in Pennsylvania and New Jersey, announced that the store has donated a houseful of furniture to a deserving family for the holidays. This is the 7th consecutive year that Mealey’s has invited area residents a chance to nominate a special family, and the company received a record 2,000-plus entries over the past month by mail, e-mail and in-person at Mealey’s Furniture & Mattress stores in Oxford Valley, PA; Bensalem, PA; and Moorestown, NJ. This year’s winner is a Philadelphia family of 6 who lost their home to foreclosure due to the father’s battle with Multiple Sclerosis. Jeffrey Rubin was diagnosed with MS early last year and, having just started a new job, was ineligible for health benefits; he was later released when he disclosed his illness and is now confined to a wheelchair. The family lost the host they owned for 5 years due to foreclosure. In trying to feed their children and save their home, the family lost everything and are living in a rented home. They are now the proud owners of a new 5-piece living room set including sofa, loveseat and tables; a dining room set with a table, 6 chairs, buffet and hutch; and a complete new 7-piece bedroom set for Josh that includes a loft bed and mattress, a built-in desk, a bureau and a desk chair. Kevin and Dan Mealey believe strongly in giving back to the community. Says Kevin, “This is our opportunity to give back and to support the community which supports us. We especially look for those who are trying to help themselves but need a helping hand.” The company has donated more than $600,000 in goods and services over the past several years to a variety of community organizations.
