Easy Furniture Web Tip #129 - Is Your Website from the 90s? Maybe It’s Time for a Website Makeover.

Some of my favorite “Internet experts” have really old websites. They look like they are from the 90s. The owners know their sites are old, but they are already very successful and the hassle of changing their old sites is daunting. Even for them.

I sympathize. I just made-over my own website and it was a lot of work and money. But I’m so happy I did.

My former site, although only three-years old, had gotten cluttered. I would get a bright idea and add it to my site. Then someone would write me a nice note, so I added that to my site. It wasn’t long before things were piling up.

Of course, there’s nothing wrong with adding new elements to your site, but if you’re not consulting with a designer, it can get messy pretty quickly. From now on, I’m consulting with my designer before adding anything to my site.

In making over my website, I had a little more fun with it. I wasn’t worried about being button-downed and appearing to be larger than I am. My business has settled in to being all about my personal website specialist services, so I let that show.

How long ago did you build your website? If it’s been three to five years, or, even, gasp, from back in the 90s, it’s time for a freshening.

There are new tools available and new looks, like …

  • Social media tools that make it easy for someone to share your page with their friends. (Think viral word-of-mouth-via-the-Internet.)
  • A tool for displaying your Twitter stream.
  • A tool to show who follows your business on Facebook.
  • Clever designs on the backgrounds.
  • Super easy commenting tools so you interact with your visitors.

Easy Furniture Web Tip #129: Furniture styles change. So do website styles. If it’s been a while since you built your website, it’s time for a website makeover.

P.S. There were some things that I couldn’t do on my new site without completely changing it’s platform. So I’m already planning for my next website makeover. Maybe next year.
