Stanley Furniture, an industry leader in the design and manufacture of residential wood furnishings, recently announced its involvement in the Triad (NC) areaʼs first entirely sustainable, LEED-registered home.

The “Greenspiration Home” is the brainchild of Greensboro, N.C. native and “green” mastermind, Trish Holder. According to Holder, a writer for the HVAC industry, it is a showcase home for modern green building practices that does not undermine the comfort, beauty or budget of a traditional, upper middle-class home. This high- performance home is designed to fit seamlessly into an existing suburban neighborhood.

In an effort to build, furnish, decorate and landscape the 3,200 square foot Greensboro, N.C. home, Holder knew that support from the right group of sponsors would be the initiativeʼs linchpin. With that in mind, Trish set out more than a year ago to partner with companies in and around North Carolina whose sustainability platform matched that of the Greenspiration Home.

“Companies that source their materials locally constitute an overwhelming percentage of what makes this home ʻgreenʼ,” explained Holder. “The less transportation required tosell and distribute a companyʼs goods, the less natural resources are required and the more ecologically-friendly its consumers become.”

The equation seemed simple enough. Brick, cabinetry, flooring, appliances – many North Carolina-based home building suppliers made Holderʼs selection simple.

However, when it came time to furnish the home, Holder faced a serious challenge: finding a furniture manufacturer that still produced its goods in the U.S. Fortunately, Holder contacted Stanley Furniture.

“With so many furniture manufacturers moving their production overseas, it wasnʼt long before I realized that Stanley Furniture was among the last of a dying breed,” Holder said. “Given the high quality of furnishings Iʼve found at Stanley Furniture, itʼs a breed I want to see flourish.”

Currently, a combination of American-made case goods by Stanley Furniture and the companyʼs youth brand, Young America, help to furnish over 75% of the expertly decorated Greenspiration Home.

“Weʼre proud to have partnered with Trish on such a worthy initiative, said Cristina Loth, Stanley Furnitureʼs newly appointed “Green Czar.” “The Greenspiration Home perfectly represents the continuous interest in and movement toward sustainability at the consumer level. At Stanley Furniture, this movement has been part of a constantly evolving focus throughout our history: to produce quality, American-made furniture with as little negative impact as possible on our environment.”
