Whereas imports of mattresses made in China jumped 24.7 percent last year, one of the leading importers of this category, Classic Brands, said that these products now comprise up to 10 percent of retail floor space.  A survey the company conducted of retailers showed that mattress imports from China are now double what they were one year ago.

Classic found that the most common reasons for the increase were a general acceptance that the quality of imports have improved dramatically, and that these products represent the greatest value in the under-$1,000 price segment, particularly for visco and latex mattresses.

Another factor was that leading manufacturers have begun to work through the logistics and challenges that have impeded retailers for many years.  China was the largest source of mattresses and foundation imports last year, jumping 24.7 percent and representing a dollar value of $89.9 million, according to an industry trade group.

“After more than eight years working with our Chinese supplier, this was one of the main reasons why we took an ownership position in our plant in Fujian last year,” said Classic Brands CEO Mike Zippelli. “We see this as a very exciting opportunity to solidify Classic’s position as the leading value brand in the United States.”

Classic Brands designs its products domestically and is aligned to build in China to the exact specifications used in its Jessup facility.  The pricing on those products are aimed at delivering greater value to the consumer.

“The cost differential provides a unique strategic advantage by enabling us to include features at the under-$1,500 price point at quality levels that are difficult to produce domestically.”

Zippelli added that while the industry has seen price increases in areas such as raw materials and shipping, Classic has been able to minimize the increases by working with its Chinese partners.

“The relationships we have built over the years in China enable us to work together to manage increases in a way that is more acceptable to our customers.”

Classic Brands sells its bedding products and accessories under the Dormia, Space Age and Natural Expressions brands, using the finest materials from around the world including all-natural and high-performance covers, lamb’s wool, Talalay and Dunlop latex, and visco-elastic memory foam.

The company offers enhanced features such as a quilted mattress tops and deluxe combination models that are comprised of memory and latex foam, as well as adjustable beds that allow each person to maximize their own sleep comfort.  Classic’s line of visco-elastic memory foam and latex mattresses, with various luxurious constructions, represents the fastest growing segment of the bedding market.  The mattresses are designed to help customers get the maximum benefit out of each and every night’s sleep.  For more information, visit www.classicmattress.com
