HAVERTY FURNITURE COMPANIES, INC. announced its national sponsorship of the American Cancer Society’s Making Strides Against Breast Cancer walk, an annual event that takes place in cities nationwide every October during National Breast Cancer Awareness Month to raise funds and awareness for breast cancer. Havertys associates are forming over 100 teams to participate in this year’s walks. Teams will ask for pledges for their miles walked, have in-store fundraisers and offer customers the opportunity to participate via a Pink Ribbon “Hope” tree in every showroom.

“We are thrilled about the difference our teams across the country are making to help eliminate breast cancer as a life-threatening disease,” said Clarence Smith, Havertys’ president and chief executive officer.

Scott Bennett, national vice president for marketing with the American Cancer Society (http://www.cancer.org/) said, “We are grateful to Havertys for stepping up its commitment to Making Strides Against Breast Cancer by becoming a national sponsor. The energized teams of Havertys associates are dedicated to making this a success.”

Making Strides Against Breast Cancer is the American Cancer Society’s premier breast cancer initiative. Since 1993, nearly 6 million walkers across the country have raised more than $400 million through Making Strides events to help fight breast cancer. Last year alone, dedicated supporters raised $60 million nationwide to help save lives and create a world with less breast cancer and more birthdays. Money raised at Making Strides events is dedicated to fighting breast cancer and funds life-saving breast cancer research, programs and services.

About the American Cancer Society

The American Cancer Society combines an unyielding passion with nearly a century of experience to save lives and end suffering from cancer. As a global grassroots force of more than three million volunteers, we fight for every birthday threatened by every cancer in every community. We save lives by helping people stay well by preventing cancer or detecting it early; helping people get well by being there for them during and after a cancer diagnosis; by finding cures through investment in groundbreaking discovery; and by fighting back by rallying lawmakers to pass laws to defeat cancer and by rallying communities worldwide to join the fight. As the nation’s largest non-governmental investor in cancer research, contributing more than $3.4 billion, we turn what we know about cancer into what we do. As a result, more than 11 million people in America who have had cancer and countless more who have avoided it will be celebrating birthdays this year.
