Las Vegas is widely hailed as the retail capital of the country with well over 5 million square feet of retail space already in place and a 40% increase in new and renovated space expected by 2004. The Venetian Resort-Hotel-Casino, adjacent to the convention center alone boasts over 300,000 square feet of retail space. In Las Vegas, more than half of the 35 million visitors who visit Las Vegas each year spend time shopping, according to the Las Vegas Visitor Profile Study. Those 18 million shoppers spend an average of $182.60 per trip, with international shoppers averaging $252. Shopping is not just a popular past-time of tourists to the area, the Las Vegas valley welcomes 6,000 new residents monthly, a population which has doubled to 1.4 million since 1989 making it the fastest growing major region in the country. “Las Vegas boasts retail facilities with the highest sales per square foot in the country. Average retail sales per square foot in the U.S. are $336, while Vegas is home to shopping centers that net $500 or even $1200,” said Doug Hope, group vice president, VNU Exhibitions. “This allows retailers to create store environments that are innovative, inventive and unique to Las Vegas. We’re delighted to be bringing GlobalShop to a city that showcases what retail can be, and also provides tremendous amenities for our exhibitors and attendees.”
