The International Furnishings and Design Association Educational Foundation has awarded a $1,000 grant to Whitehall Skene Manor Preservation, Inc. for restoration efforts on Skene Manor, a unique Victorian High Gothic mansion listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The 1870's white sandstone mansion, built as the permanent residence of Hon. Joseph Potter of the Supreme Court of New York, sits on the side of a rocky hill and overlooks the Champlain Canal in historic Whitehall, NY, "the birthplace of the U.S. Navy." Saved from demolition by a community grass-roots effort, Skene Manor retains its original structural elements but needs extensive repairs in order to return the building and grounds to their original state. Plans call for the restoration of the building's architectural integrity and character, as well as the re-establishment of the Victorian gardens.
