Resounding music that threatens to stop at any moment, the desperate rush to find a vacant chair, the fear of being the only one left – all culminated by a blissful sigh of relief when you realizeyou're the last one seated. IKEA, the leading home furnishings retailer, is conducting the first ever "Stand Up for Those Who Can't - A Stylish Musical Chairs Event" on Wednesday, October 11, 2000, at the Cooper-Hewitt, National Design Museum. As a sponsor of the museum's new exhibition, Masterpieces from the Vitra Design Museum: Furnishing the Modern Era (October 10, 2000-February 2, 2001), IKEA organized the musical chairs event and will donate $1,000 per musical chair player to the Christopher Reeve Paralysis Foundation (CRPF). Anyone interested in reliving their childhood memories is invited to participate in the event (limited to the first 25 participants) which will take place at the exhibition's opening reception in the Arthur Ross Terrace and Garden at 7 p.m. "Many IKEA designers have been inspired by pieces in the Vitra collection," said Marty Marston, Public Relations Manager, IKEA N.A. "It seemed fitting to organize this charitable musical chairs event which fosters an even more important type of inspiration. IKEA is thrilled to have New Yorkers join in this fun activity in support of the Christopher Reeve Paralysis Foundation." The "Stand Up for Those Who Can't" musical chairs event, which will take place at the museum exhibition's opening reception, will be played on stylish chairs from the new IKEA 2001 Catalog. In addition to helping CRPF, each player will receive one of the musical IKEA chairs for free, and the winner will receive a $1,000 IKEA 2001 Catalog Shopping Spree. "We are truly honored that IKEA has chosen to support the Christopher Reeve Paralysis Foundation through this unique musical chair event," said Mitchell R. Stoller, President and Chief Executive Officer of CRPF. "The commitment of corporations such as IKEA will significantly help us in our mission to find effective treatments and cures for spinal cord injury and other central nervous system disorders."
