MGM Transport Corp., the leading carrier specializing in furniture transport and logistics, marked ten years of fundraising for cancer research with its annual Massood Foundation Golf Tournament, held June 18, 2001.
The annual tournament began in memory of Albert Massood, son of Louis and Mary Massood. Albert was one of ten children, including Joseph, Michael and George, founders of MGM Transport.
"When Al died of colon cancer," said Joseph Massood, Board of Directors, MGM, "it made us want to do something to help other people."
The Massood's commitment to supporting cancer research was reinforced with the deaths of other family members - Helen Massood, Jeanette Massood, and Patricia Massoud - due to cancer.
The first year, the tournament raised $35,000 for St. Joseph's Hospital Medical Center in Paterson, NJ. Ten years later, the tournament and MGM's donations have contributed nearly $350,000 to the organization.
"We value the Massood family for their extraordinary support and dedication in hosting the golf tournament for ten years," said Tim Barr, vice president for development, St. Joseph's Hospital Medical Center and executive director of the hospital's foundation. "The tournament draws support from friends and golfers from all over the East Coast, so we are indeed fortunate to be able to extend our reach though the Massood's efforts."
The tournament, which took place at Knoll Country Club in Parsippany, NJ this year, involved 150 golfers and continues to grow."We raised $30,000 this year," said Joseph Massood. "It's still going strong."
The Massood family is involved with St. Joseph's in other ways as well. Joseph Massood serves on the Board of Directors, and MGM Transport sponsors the annual hospital charity ball and a variety of other events throughout the year.
In addition to its involvement with St. Joseph's, MGM Transport is active in community service initiatives and emergency relief efforts. The company donates its services during natural disasters, including the delivery of 15 truckloads of furniture to Eastern North Carolina in the aftermath of Hurricane Floyd and some 35 truckloads of bottled water to Georgia and the Midwest when floods contaminated drinking water supplies in 1994 and 1995.
MGM Transport is also deeply committed to the annual United Way campaigns, encouraging employee participation in addition to its corporate giving. Last year, 35 percent of MGM employees contributed to the United Way in North Carolina, Virginia and New Jersey.
"Businesses must be mindful of the communities where they operate or serve," said Edward Massood, president and COO of MGM. "As employers and community members, we must take the lead on important issues and step up to doing what's right."
Based in High Point, NC, MGM Transport is the industry leader in furniture warehousing, distribution and logistics. With a fleet of 230 tractors and 710 Great Dane trailers, the $40 million company serves major furniture manufacturers, including Thomasville Furniture, Stanley, and Bassett as well as more than 3,500 retailers across the country such as Federated Department Stores, Carson Pirie Scott and Thomasville Home Furnishings of Arizona.
