The Futon Association International reported today that preparations for the 2004 Futon and Specialty Sleep Expo remain in high gear despite a recent decision by the Specialty Sleep Association to terminate its involvement with the show. The two associations have maintained a contractual agreement relating to The Futon & Specialty Sleep Expo (owned and managed by FAI) since 1999. The show has been held at a number of venues nationwide and offered both the manufacturing and retail members of both groups a single event that benefited all. The 2004 Futon and Specialty Sleep Expo will be held in Philadelphia at the convention center. Patricia MacMillen, FAI President, expressed surprise at SSA’s decision. “I was surprised SSA voted to end its involvement because the Expo benefits so many diverse constituencies in the industry. Plus, it financially benefited the SSA and its members. It’s an unfortunate decision for both of them.” Explains Tambra Jones, Futon Expo Manager, “It seems especially unfortunate for SSA members. The SSA, as a sister association, shared a percentage of Expo proceeds. SSA members who exhibited were granted member rates and services. Now, SSA cannot extend those savings to its member exhibitors.” However, FAI will extend exhibitor savings to any SSA member who joins FAI. This action will allow SSA members to exhibit at the 2004 show at reduced rates. (SSA has not sanctioned any 2004 shows for its members). “We have also made a major commitment to marketing the show with the express goal of seeing more dealers attend than ever before,” Jones said. “Expo preparation continues full steam ahead,” says MacMillen. “Exhibitor space continues to fill at its usual brisk pace. Philadelphia is within a day’s driving distance of 40% of the US population. We welcome and appreciate all exhibitors and attendees. We look forward to 2004 with great anticipation.” For more information about the Futon and Specialty Sleep Expo visit the Futon Association web site: http://www.futon.org/expo/
