On course with its philosophy of selling well-designed utilitarian products, Crate and Barrel launched CB2. The 6,000 sq. ft. concept store was unveiled Saturday, January 15, 2000 at 3757 North Lincoln Avenue in Chicago. Just as the first Crate and Barrel store opened in 1962 in the burgeoning old town area, CB2 is part of a reemerging neighborhood on the city's north side. With the mission of making good design accessible to a young urban audience, CB2 expands on the popular home and storage lines of the Crate and Barrel stores. The product mix is contemporary in design, priced for everyday use and includes an initial offering of furniture accessories, home office, functional gadgets and storage objects. "Everything I sell, I would like to own myself," says CB2 store manager Raymond Pitt. "Good design means simplicity and functionality. Our product offering truly reflects that." Strong displays, streamlined sales counters and an educated staff are CB2 signature strengths that promise a fun, straightforward environment for those who put a premium on good design. Utilizing a wide, modern range of materials, from recycled rubber to galvanized aluminum, the CB2 collection is streamlined, but with an attitude. From teal blue acrylic market bags to purple extension cords, color plays an important role in the merchandise mix. CB2's buyers have sourced the world for objects consistent with the look of the store and the needs of its customers. CB2 is a new concept by parent company Crate and Barrel. By initiating trends in product design and presentation, and by building its business "one customer at a time" Crate and Barrel has grown to its present status as one of the most influential and respected home furnishings retailers in the U.S., currently having 85 stores in 20 major markets nationwide.
