At the recent International Home Furnishings Center in High Point, North Carolina, Waterford Crystal unveiled their Carina. Behind this exclusive collection is one of our industry's most innovative and up-and-coming designers, Stephen Blackman of Blackman Design Associates. The exclusive Carina Collection perfectly complements last season's Georgetown Collection. Blackman had provided the initial concept and design for these seven pieces, which include chandeliers, single and double wall sconces and a hanging pendant. Made in Italy, these pieces are crafted with hand-cut Waterford crystal in new patterns and finished with gold-plated solid brass. But in addition to decorative pieces such as the Waterford collections, Blackman shows his versatility in lighting design through his work in consumer lighting products as well. He is already known for very practical yet stylish consumer lighting work such as the 3-in-1 Liteforce distributed by Satco. This attractive light fixture has a detachable emergency krypton flashlight, nightlight controlled by a photocell and a florescent work light. The innovation and diversity in Blackman's work are apparent in his three soon-to-be-released products. Satco will be introducing a series of aimable modular lights, with sleek and low profiles, that connect to each other to make varying lengths. Verilux will be unveiling a Rise-and-Shine light, which is a decorative natural-spectrum tabletop light that gradually brightens to the sound of nature, rather than jolting a person out of sleep through an annoying alarm. This summer, we'll also see Blackman's high-tech expertise in his "Emerge-Safe" light which replaces a light switchplate with an attractive emergency light that activates when it senses a loss of power to the home. This wireless design works on state-of-the-art technology and is a crucial lifeline to exit points in blackout situations. As a professional designer for over 15 years, and with major clients such as Waterford, Troy Lighting, Illuminating Experiences, Satco, Broan and more, Blackman is able to give us qualified and professional commentary on the state of the industry and its future. From high-end decorative work to high-volume consumer products, Blackman is an expert in also the design-patent-build process.
