NEBRASKA FURNITURE MART TO BREAK GROUND ON A $15 MILLION DOLLAR GRAND RENOVATION

Nebraska Furniture Mart, the largest single home furnishing store in the U.S., celebrated their $15 million renovation of their main store with a ground breaking ceremony on Wednesday, October 1, 1997. Robert Batt, the Executive Vice President of Nebraska Furniture Mart, led the ceremony that included comments by Governor Ben Nelson and Mayor Hal Daub. Bruce Grewcock, the Executive Vice President of the Kiewit Construction Group, also gave remarks at the event. The two-year improvement project was awarded to the Peter Kiewit Construction Company of Omaha and will improve the layout and add an additional 32,000 square feet to the main store of Nebraska Furniture Mart. Improvements include state-of-the-art decor and display, a new structural layout and escalators. The building formerly known as Trends will be converted into a Home Office/ Entertainment showroom. In 1996, Nebraska Furniture Mart had sales over $264 million and employed over 1,000 people. The 75-acre campus is comprised of over a million square feet. Nebraska Furniture Mart is one of the largest attractions in Omaha, since it draws over a million visitors a year and generates 50% of its sales from out-of-town markets. Nebraska Furniture Mart has always been an asset to the economy of Omaha and the state of Nebraska. During the two-year term of the project, Nebraska Furniture Mart will remain open and offer customers the widest selection, highest quality, and always the lowest price.
