Veteran Furniture Journalist and Southern Buying Syndicate President JohnTobin Passes

John Harold Tobin, 79, died Friday, July 16, 1999 at Moses Cone Memorial Hospital. He had been in declining health for several months. A resident of High Point since 1946, Mr. Tobin was born May 30, 1920 in Springfield, IL, the son of Roy and Helen Holmes Tobin. Mr. Tobin was a well-known furniture industry marketing consultant and long-time president of Southern Buying Syndicate, an association of retail furniture stores. For many years, he also served as publisher of Monday Morning Message, a weekly newsletter directed to the furniture industry, and president of Ad Impact furniture industry advertising service. Mr. Tobin was a contributing editor to FURNITURE WORLD Magazine for over 20 years. Most recently, Mr. Tobin was editor of Home Furnishing Review, the publication of The Home Furnishings International Association. An active member of the community, Mr. Tobin was an elder of the First Presbyterian Church of High Point and the board of directors of the Furniture Library. He was a Sunday school teacher at the Presbyterian Home, a Meals on Wheels volunteer and held many other positions throughout the community. Surviving are two sons, R. Scott Tobin and wife Victoria of 418 Edgedale Drive, High Point, and John F. Tobin and wife Susan of 301 Otteray Ave., High Point. Also surviving are four grandchildren, John Scott Tobin and Erin Elizabeth Tobin of High Point and Mrs. Melissa Schofield and Mrs., Joanna Carbello, both of Athens, GA. A memorial has been established for the benefit of the First Presbyterian Church, in High Point, N.C.
