The American Society of Furniture Designers (ASFD) announced that it's 1999 Pinnacle Design Achievement Awards competition is well underway with entries being received from furniture designers and manufacturers throughout North America. The Pinnacle Awards were created in 1996 for the purpose of promoting better design quality and to encourage the recognition of furniture designers. "ASFD proudly recognizes and wishes to thank the 1999 Pinnacle Award sponsors for their continued support and sponsorship for eleven of the entry categories" said Christine Evans, executive director. The sponsors are Appalachian Hardwood for juvenile furniture; FurnitureStyle magazine for major collections; Hafele America Company for home entertainment/home theater; Home Lighting & Accessories magazine for home lighting; Laminating Materials Association, for occasional furniture and home office; Leggett & Platt, Inc. for motion upholstery; Lilly Industries, Inc. for bedroom; Ornamental Products for accessories; The October Company for formal dining; and Wilsonart International for casual dining. The judges are Dr. Richard Bennington, director of the Home Furnishings Program at High Point University; LeRoy Briggs, consultant and contributing editor of UDM magazine; Brian Carroll, case goods editor at Furniture/Today; Judith Cushman, head of J. Z. Cushman & Company; Robert Ficks, Jr., director of the Home Furnishings Council; Ellen Gefen, president of Gefen Productions and Majec, Inc.; Jaclyn Hirschhaut, vice president of public relations for the AFMA; Liz Seymour, trade press writer; Max Shangle, instructor of furniture and industrial design at Kendall College of Art and Design; Cindy Sheaffer, editor of Home Accents Today; and, Tony Wilkerson, senior vice president for Havertys Furniture Companies. "Based on the quality and quantity of the 1998 entries, this year's competition promises to be the most successful to date and very exciting," said Steve Hodges, Pinnacle Awards chairman. "I strongly suspect that the judges will have some tough challenges ahead of them." The finalists in all categories will be notified soon after the judging in early September and the winners will be announced during the Pinnacle awards ceremony on Friday evening, October 15 at the High Point Country Club during the Fall Market.
