The 2003 Lifetime Achievement Award was presented during the Gala Reception for the Canadian Home Furnishings Awards in the new Aviation Ballroom at the International Centre in Mississauga, on January 12, 2003. The Lifetime Achievement Award is presented to a Canadian manufacturer who has made significant contributions to both the Canadian Home Furnishings Industry and to the communities in which the company operates. Nominations for the award are requested from all furniture association members across Canada and are evaluated by the Board of Directors of the Ontario Manufacturers Association, with the cooperation of the Quebec Furniture Manufacturers Association and Furniture West. This year the Lifetime Achievement Award was presented to Mr. Serge Racine. Serge was the driving force behind Shermag for 25 years. He had the vision and drive to create a profitable, vertically integrated company delivering quality product to an exclusive distribution network while working as a socially conscious corporate citizen. Today Shermag has thirteen factories and three sawmills employing approximately 2,000 people. Serge retired as Chairman of the Board of Shermag at the end of December 2001. Previous winners have been Orville Mead of Durham Furniture, Bruce McPherson of Gibbard Furniture Shops and Pat Thody of Simmons Canada.
