MGM Transport, a leading transportation and logistics provider in the home furnishings industry, announces today its acquisition of the customer base of Byrd Motor Lines, a $4 million specialized furniture transportation company based in Lexington, N.C. Byrd Motor Lines has serviced the Southeast for 75 years, specializing in less than truckload (LTL) and consolidation services. The company's owners, Don and Margaret Strickland, are retiring.
Edward Massood, president of MGM Transport, says, "We are so pleased with the opportunity to enhance our service area and customer base. With our core service area being the East Coast, this acquisition provides MGM Transport even more access to the Southeast, thus increasing the density of our entire service area. We have taken ownership of all product flowing through the Byrd pipeline and arranged for deliveries to continue seamlessly to all Byrd customers, thereby making the acquisition and change in routing transparent."
In addition to the premier services MGM Transport now provides to customers, this acquisition allows MGM Transport to reach more customers in a greater geographic area and offer them expanded services. While Byrd customers will continue to experience the same high-quality, consistent service to which they are accustomed, they will now receive many value-added benefits from MGM, such as Web tracking and the unique Guaranteed Freight Program. This program includes an expanded customer care department, a rapid response claims policy, and guaranteed on-time delivery.
Based in High Point, N.C., MGM Transport provides the best transportation service in the furnishings industry. The company offers 24-hour access to information on shipments and contents, plus expert guidance on how to use that information to better serve customers and improve business. With a fleet of 230 tractors and 710 Great Dane trailers, the $40 million company serves two-thirds of the home furnishings retailers on the East Coast and two-thirds of the home furnishing manufacturers nationwide. Customers include Thomasville Furniture, Bassett, Federated Department Stores, Carson Pirie Scott, Raymour & Flanigan Furniture and Thomasville Home Furnishings of Arizona.
