An easy-to-follow book for small to mid-size specialty retailers has been announced for publication this summer by a 40-year retailing veteran. "Inside Retailing 101: The Stock Room Door Works Only One Way " has been written by Marilyn Nason, who has been involved in small to mid-size specialty retailing for over 40 years, as a wholesaler, retailer, editor, publisher, trade magazine owner and retailing consultant. Much of the information contained in the new book comes from the more than 1000 seminars Nason has presented for specialty retailers throughout North America over three decades, as well as the several thousand trade publication features she has written for major retailing domestic and international publications. A leading specialty retailing consultant, Nason has written the easy-to-follow guide to competitive, profitable retailing following "repeated requests from retailers attending my seminars for something they could use as a daily reference in their stores throughout the year," she explains. Included in the book are chapters on the basics of specialty retailing; working with vendors; identifying and targeting a store's core customer base; hiring/firing/training store staffing; developing marketing programs; creating a unique store personality; addressing the ethnic customer; utilizing mailing lists; maximizing trade show attendance; developing sound open-to-buys; addressing store shrinkage and theft; dealing with competitors, etc. Also featured in the book is a special section for hospital and museum gift shops with how-to for dealing with volunteer management and staffing of these shops. The book will be available in late June through mail order and at major industry trade shows. The book is being distributed by Mariste Publications, PO Box 8190, Asheville, NC 28814-8190, with a cover price of $19.95 (plus $2.95 for p/h).
