"Realistic consumer bankruptcy rules are long overdue." said Steve DeHaan, executive vice president of National Home Furnishings Association (NHFA), in commending members of Congress for re-introducing legislation today to reform the consumer bankruptcy code. DeHaan said, "Our consumer bankruptcy code makes it far too easy for debtors to declare complete, bankruptcy and to manipulate the system, even when they have a steady stream of income. This is not fair to retailers and it is not fair to other consumers," DeHaan continued, "Declaring bankruptcy should be the last resort, not the first resort- If a debtor has a reasonable income, all we are asking is that a plan, that is fair and reasonable., be worked out for the payment of debts owed." DeHaan concluded, "The bankruptcy code is an example of a good concept gone sour over time. It is time to restore a measure of common sense to bankruptcy rules."
