Southern California-based designer Barclay Butera, ASID, is one of a select few non-Chicago designers to be asked to participate in 'House Beautiful's' first-ever Chicago Makeover House (October issue). Excited to bring a very different look to this home originally built in 1900, Butera made multiple trips to the Glencoe suburb over the last five months, adding his signature style to the family room, ground-floor powder room and hallway. He's pleased to once again be involved with fellow top designers and the magazine, and to be supporting the Infant Welfare Society of Chicago. Following his highly acclaimed, Rat Pack era-inspired guesthouse bedroom suite for February's 'House Beautiful' showhouse in Los Angeles, Butera continues the theme of old-Hollywood glamour and clean, tailored styling. However, his palette has altered. For the family room, adjoining powder room and hallway, he has tapped off-white, chocolate and subtle pink tones. And his textures integrate heavyweight linen with a touch of silk. The Spring season feel of the previous design home has been replaced with the hues of Fall. The family room features the Mulholland Sofa in Belgian Linen and Davis Chair in a subtle off-white sateen with petipointe from his own Butera Home Furnishings line. He is also pleased to feature original art from Soicher-Marin; complimentary furnishings from Hickory Chair; pillows by Dransfield & Ross; an Italian oversized ceiling chandelier; and a nostalgic shag carpet. The powder room showcases a vanity, mirror and sconces from Kallista Michael S. Smith Colletion. Butera has been inspired for these showhouses to reflect a time of sophisticated but livable homes, as seen in Cary Grant and Bette Davis-era films, and films like “Auntie Mame” and “Breakfast at Tiffany's”. These movies evoke a refined, tailored elegance, with an inescapable casual, even whimsical, side. As then, people are again enjoying their homes more, and now, the interest in the home and one's design choices are more frequently a focus of conversation. Barclay Butera gives everyone something to discuss and enjoy. Makeover House Details: September 12 - October 10, 9:30am - 3pm on weekdays and 11am-4pm on weekends. Admission $30.
