The Andrew Major Scholarship is established by Flora Major in memory of her husband. Mr. Major was recognized worldwide as a preeminent textile pioneer and was referred to as “The King of the Mills.” He was founder of Mastercraft Corporation in Rutherfordton, which with his leadership became the world’s largest jacquard mill. He was also instrumental in creating Jacquards in Cliffside. The scholarship will be administered in the following manner: -The Andrew Major Scholarship should be awarded to students majoring in Commercial Graphics or Art. -The scholarship will be awarded to a full-time student. -The Andrew Major Scholarship is not need based. However, need may be a factor where students of equal talent are in the selection pool. -Selection will be based upon the evaluation of potential as evidenced by a portfolio submitted in support of the application. In addition, the recipient will be selected on the basis of academic performance. Those with a “B” average are eligible to apply. Residents of Rutherford County will receive primary consideration. -The Director of Admissions and Financial Aid will be responsible with selecting the recipient in conjunction with the Scholarship Committee with support from faculty in Commercial Graphics and/or Art. -The scholarship can be maintained for a period of two years (four semesters) contingent upon maintaining a cumulative grade point average of 3.0. -A report will be given to Mrs. Andrew Major each year listing the scholarship recipient’s name, address, and award amount. It is anticipated that the first scholarship will be awarded in 2005.
