Durham Furniture will open their new 18,000 square foot showroom in time for the October High Point Market,. “Still at Market Square, still on the fourth floor and still very easy to find,” said President John Scarscella. “Tom Mitchell, Merchandise Mart Properties, has been very helpful to us. Christy Spangle of Barbour, Spangle Design, is responsible for décor “Christy is also working on the design of the showroom at our Educational Centre at Chesley, Ontario, an integral part of the major expansion of our plant and lumber handling facility scheduled to be fully operational in 2004.” Durham consolidated its solid wood production activities in 1993 to niche market solid wood bedroom suites, shipped first to High Point in April 1994. “The company has made the decision to reintroduce dining rooms and three new collections will be presented at High Point this fall, each equating existing bedroom suites. There will be an additional Louis Philippe group.” Vice-President Manufacturing Lloyd Love told us that “Durham now employs almost 800 craftspeople and when the current expansion is complete, the roster will rise to over 1000. The home plant at Durham, Ontario is at capacity production. Since the Chesley location was acquired in 1997 it has tripled in size. “Marketing plans include bringing loads of retail sales people both to Durham and Chesley plants to see for themselves the entire furniture construction story from raw lumber to finished product. Pam Nixon has been in charge of our Toronto showroom for many years and will assume similar responsibilities in Chesley where she will also maintain her office as a sales representative.”
