Webb To Close Galax Plant - Eight Charged In Broyhill Embezzlement

News Briefs: *************************** The Winston Salem Journal reported that Webb Furniture Enterprises has plans to close its Galax, VA bedroom plant in January. The closing will affect over 300 employes of the 80 year old company. This will reduce the company payroll from its peak of 750 to 160. Management cites Chinese competition for the closings and says that they will continue to produce mirrors and furniture made of particleboard. *************************** WXII12-TV, Winston Salem (http://www.wxii12.com) reported that eight Basset Furniture managers were charge in the theft of $2 million worth of inventory. The thefts were discovered during inventory counts. Some of the items have been recovered and the 8 long term employees have been charged with embexzzlement. A report from News 14 (http://rdu.news14.com) Carolina noted that a tip resulted in a priviate security firm being hired to uncover the conspiracy. *************************** The Dallas Morning News (http://www.dallasnews.com) reported that Gabberts plans to leave the Dallas/ Fort Worth, Texas market due to declining sales. The paper noted reasons for the pullout being increased competition from catalogs, mass merchandisers and IKEA all competing in a slow growth environment.
