High Point University senior Erin E. Farrington received the 2006 Haverty Cup on April 26 during a ceremony at the International Home Furnishings Market. Steve Burdette, vice president of Haverty Furniture Companies, Inc., presented the award to Farrington, who graduates from HPU this weekend with a Bachelor of Science Degree in home furnishings marketing and a minor in interior design. The Haverty Cup was established in 1988 by Rawson Haverty, Sr., Chairman of the Haverty Furniture Company, to honor annually the most outstanding home furnishings graduate of High Point University. Haverty established the award to encourage young people to pursue a career in the home furnishings industry. Haverty’s Furniture Companies, Inc., began in 1885, in Atlanta, Ga., where its headquarters still operates. Haverty’s boasts more than 100 showrooms throughout 14 states. Farrington is a native of Mechanicsville, Iowa. During the time she has been at High Point University she has maintained a 3.5 grade point average (out of a possible 4.0). She has worked on campus and has been very active in a number of campus organizations such as her social sorority and the Home Furnishings and Design Club where she has been serving as co-president during her senior year. Her honors include membership in Delta Mu Delta National Business Honor Society, and being selected for the Dean’s list. She has shown volunteerism through fundraising for juvenile diabetes, participating in High Point University orientation and various religious and student government activities. Farrington has demonstrated her interest in a career using her interior design and home furnishings marketing knowledge by working as assistant manager for RomWeber Furniture Company for their High Point Market Showroom for the last two years. “Erin is both an outstanding student and individual,” said Dr. Richard Bennington, director of the Home Furnishings Program at HPU. "She is the type of person who can work independently and also gets along well with her fellow students. She is a good team player. We are proud that she is our 2006 recipient of the Haverty Cup. She is committed to a meaningful career in the home furnishings industry." Farrington received a $2,500 cash award and an engraved replica of the Haverty Cup. Her name will be engraved, along with the names of previous winners on the Haverty Cup, which is kept on permanent display at the university. The Home Furnishings Programs at High Point University are somewhat unique by combining the study of business and home furnishings. Students interested in the Home Furnishings Programs have a choice of two majors: home furnishings marketing or interior design. At High Point University, every student receives an extraordinary education in a fun environment with caring people. HPU is a liberal arts institution with approximately 3,000 undergraduate and graduate students from 52 countries and 36 states at campuses in High Point and Winston-Salem. It is ranked by US News and World Report 12th among comprehensive universities in the South and in the top 100 nationally.
