Alicia Cueva didn’t hesitate. She knew exactly what to do with the $1,000 cash prize she had just won on her first buying trip to the High Point Market: donate it to her favorite charity in Monterey, Mexico.
The entry form Cueva submitted in the Napp Deady showroom on the market’s opening day was drawn the following morning as the first of four daily grand prizes and 40 other gifts. The prizes were part of IHFC’s “Shop Our ‘A’ Floors First” promotion. Cueva, a registered buyer, was in High Point buying for her store, Del Hogar.
After the drawing a beaming Cueva immediately committed the $1,000 to Mercy Home, which her store already supports. The charity, inspired by Mother Teresa’s words and works, provides lodging, meals, medical care and spiritual attention to poor children and elderly with terminal and non-communicable diseases. Two homes care for 90 elderly patients, and one home cares for 30 children. Physicians, nurses, therapists, cooks, janitors and chauffeurs participate in this labor of love, assisting nuns who serve each home 24 hours a day.
Other winners were:
Lynn Meeker, Lynn Meeker Designs in Wilmington, N.C. On Wednesday at market, she won a trip for two to New York, plus two tickets to a Broadway show. She had registered in the Foster’s Point showroom.
Barry Ambrose, Ambrose Furniture in Kitty Hawk, N.C. On Thursday at market, he won a $1,000 American Express Gift Card. He had registered in the Maxton Showroom.
Sandra Jackson, Midtown Design in Lithonia, Ga. On Friday at market, she won two round-trip airline tickets to anywhere in the continental United States. She registered in the Van Teal showroom.
Forty others, 10 each day, won iPOD Shuffles, which is small enough to clip to a lapel, pocket or sleeve while packing enough memory to store 240 songs. Prize winners were from the West Coast, Canada, Mexico, Puerto Rico and everywhere in between.
The promotion was designed to create excitement on IHFC’s accessory floors – the largest and broadest selection of decorative accessories, lighting, floor coverings and wall art in High Point.
Opening in 1921, IHFC was the original showroom building in High Point and after 85 years of expansion remains the centerpiece of the world’s largest home-furnishings trade show that attracts more than 90,000 participants twice a year to 2,600 showrooms covering 11.5 million square feet. As “Market Central,” IHFC alone is home to 650 of the leading home-furnishings manufacturers, including 13 of the top 20 companies, and covers 3.5 million square feet.
