Roy Hester, National Vice President Of Sales for Planned Furniture Promotions Inc. (PFP), an affiliate of Gene Rosenberg Associates, LLC., announced that the company has been selected to organize and run the store closings of Mecklenburg Furniture in Charlotte, North Carolina, and Boll Furniture Company in Charleston, West Virginia. Mecklenburg Furniture had been Charlotte's oldest and, at one point, its largest furniture retailer for over 60 years. It was known for its upscale brands, including Baker, Century, Hooker, Hancock & Moore, Pennsylvania House, and others. The store has been a widely recognized landmark since 1940. Mecklenburg Furniture, although not under any financial stress, has decided to close its doors in Charlotte due to changes in demographics and the overall business climate. Boll Furniture has been in business since the late 1930's, specializing in furniture, accessories, and interior design services. Boll, too, had been an upscale retailer with brands such as Henredon, Drexel Heritage, Lexington, Bradington Young, Henkel Harris, and others. The Boll Furniture building, a century-old landmark in downtown Charleston, has been sold and will become an office building. Although Boll Furniture also was not experiencing financial difficulties, after three generations of Boll family running the business, the family decided to close the business due to changes in the market. In addition, a key member of the management team retired last year. "There have been a number of key factors leading to our decision to close. The premium furniture business has been affected by overseas manufacturers who have experienced diminished brand power. Locally, the center of shopping has moved from the downtown out to suburbs, dramatically reducing consumer traffic," said Charles Boll, the current owner. Planned Furniture Promotions will be overseeing the closing sales of both furniture companies. "As the leading planned promotion company, PFP has its own dedicated division for upscale furniture retail promotions. Our staff includes more people with personal experience working in high-end retail stores than any other promotional company. They understand the unique needs of the market," said Hester.
