The American Society of Furniture Designers recently awarded the 2003 David Kline Memorial Scholarship in the amount of $4000 to Trilokesh Rana, a senior at Kendall College of Art & Design in Grand Rapids, Michigan for his "Kosi Table" design. The award was named in honor of the late David Kline, freelance designer and a past president of ASFD. Nominees from 15 targeted universities were asked to submit a "mini portfolio" of sketches, renderings and details of one furniture design project including a written essay. Furniture hardware producer Kaba Ilco, headquartered in Montreal, Canadaco-sponsored the scholarship competition. Enzo Notturno, Kaba Ilco's international sales manager joined ASFD board member, Philip Behrens in making the presentation to Rana before an audience of ASFD members and guests at the April 4 ASFD Market dinner in High Point . In his talk, Mr. Notturno expressed pride in supporting the efforts to advance and promote the furniture design profession. Mr. Andy Filippi, SalesManager, Kaba Ilco also attended the dinner. "Rana's table design has a visually pleasing, exotic architectural form which appears to be fresh and original. The'Kosi' symmetry and simple construction lend to its manufacturability", said Ted Rittersdorf, ASFD Vice President and furniture designer from Steve Hodges Associates who judged the student competition along with designers Philip Behrens, Natura Design and Scott Coley of McDaniel and Coley, Inc. Rana will graduate in May 2003 with a BFA in furniture design and is seeking a furniture designer/engineer position with a USA based company with manufacturing in Asia.
