CORY Home Delivery Service announced that In a move supporting their aggressive growth and expansion, the company recently relocated its corporate headquarters to expanded new offices in Secaucus, NJ.
CORY marked the occasion with a festive open house and ribbon-cutting ceremony attended by dignitaries including the Honorable Mayor of Secaucus Dennis Elwell, Hudson County Chamber of Commerce members, clients, associates, and friends.
“Welcome to Secaucus, the place to be,” Mayor Elwell said as he officially cut the ribbon with CEO Joseph Cory, Sr.
“As we prepare to celebrate 75 years in business, the new offices reflect our continued goal to be the premier home delivery company in the United States,” said Joe Cory.
Relocation to the new offices at 150 Meadowlands Parkway, which are centrally located in a modern environment that allows for efficient operation and enhanced corporate presence, comes after a lengthy history in Jersey City. The building there at 888 Newark Avenue, built in three stages from 1918 to 1925, was first owned by P. Lorillard, and then by Western Electric for manufacturing rotary-dial telephones.
CORY purchased the 350,000-square-foot building in 1975. It was both the company headquarters and warehouse since the early 1980’s, serving clients including Bamberger’s, MHM,
Traub, B. Altman, Klein Sleep, Hillside Bedding, Roma Furniture, Ethan Allen, FrankArt, E.J. Audi, Baker, Pottery Barn, and many others.
In the early years, CORY loaded and dispatched 17 trucks a day from that location. The facility had a garage with full-time mechanics, its own diesel pumps, and a railcar system that transported boxcars filled with furniture from the Carolinas to its own private loading dock.
Many colorful events happened there, including the following story that is humorous in the retelling, though probably not so at the time, at least to company founder Joseph Cory’s brother John Corigliano, the inside man of the operation.
Uncle John had parked his beautiful black Cadillac next to the railroad tracks when a train came rushing into the yard. As it came to a stop, a tremendous roar erupted, which seemed like an explosion. The rail car proceeded to fall over ― right on top of Uncle John’s car. Needless to say, he never parked his car in that spot again.
Over the years, many changes have taken place in the Newark Avenue neighborhood, which in CORY’s early years was home to Irish and Italian families. As it evolved in the late 80’s, it became home to Little India.
In the late 1990’s, CORY sold the building to Moishe’s Moving & Storage, remaining in the building until the end of 2007. Today Moishe’s uses the building primarily for document storage.
“We will miss the wonderful times we had in Jersey City,” said Joe Cory, Sr. “We’re good to go for the future, which holds tremendous promise as we grow. Our new headquarters is ideally located and easily accessed by major highways.”
