From Memorial Day through Labor Day, "The Dare to Care Kid's Crusade" has set a goal to donate fifty new twin-sized beds to area needy families approved through the downtown Pittsburgh Salvation Army. Through every purchase of a Serta Perfect Sleeper at Mattress Discounter's Pennsylvania locations, a portion of the proceeds will go toward providing new Serta mattresses and box springs. "Mattress Discounters is a company with a big heart," said Major Robert Reel, The Salvation Army's Western Pennsylvania Divisional Commander. "They support a variety of our programs as well as a host of other very worthy local charities. Because of their community-minded efforts, they set the bar high for other companies seeking ways to make a difference. We are honored that they offered to partner with us once again." A new bed can be the critical link between a child in foster care coming home to his or her family of origin. "We know of many children who are on a waiting list for new beds," said Gerald Johns, The Salvation Army's Allegheny County Director of Social Services. "We work closely with Children and Youth Services when kids are being reunited with their parents through the foster care system. Each child must have his or her own bed before they may return home." Once families are thoroughly screened, beds will also go to homeless children from The Salvation Army's downtown Pittsburgh Family Caring Center and disaster victims once they find permanent housing. Johns continued, "Like most charities in this depressed economy, much of our funding is limited, but thanks to Mattress Discounters, these children can now proceed with their family recovery process."
