IKEA announced it is evaluating the feasibility of a site in Davie, Florida, as its first store and restaurant destination in South Florida, and in the state. Pending further review by IKEA, as well as studies and approvals by governmental agencies, construction on a store could start in 2005, with a 2006 opening. Plans for the 40-acre site could include a 310,000 square foot IKEA store with 1,400 parking spaces, as well as additional retail shops. A store at this location would blend local design features with the unique architectural design for which IKEA stores are known worldwide. South Florida represents their largest market where they do not have any stores, and where there are many local residents who already are fans of IKEA by having visited existing stores around the country. Besides construction jobs, 400 co-workers typically join the IKEA family when a new store is fully built. A store in Davie could provide significant annual sales tax and property tax revenue benefits for state and local governments, as well as schools.
